New Firmware Update Released For Galaxy Note II

Samsung has released a firmware update for the Galaxy Note II , which enables the much anticipated split-screen multitasking feature.
Multi-View enhances the multitasking capabilities of the Galaxy Note II, allowing you to run two apps on the screen simultaneously. Mind you, not all Android apps are supported, but unlike the Galaxy Note 10.1, whereonly Samsung apps could be brought up to the screen, Multi-Window supports Google apps as well (Gmail, YouTube, Chrome and Talk).

The update version is XXALIJ1 and comes with a new baseband, as well as an update to Google Chrome.
If you own a Samsung Galaxy Note II, you can check for the new firmware from About device -> Software update. While waiting to download, you can see Multi-Window in action on the official Samsung Galaxy Note II ad below (around the 2 minute mark).

LG Nexus phone May Come With wireless charging Feature

The next Google Nexus phone is speculated to be co-manufacturedby LG. There has been talk about the phone's specifications, and thepossible time frame in which it will be announced .

Now, some specifications of the smartphone have been leaked. The model, which is being referred to as the LG Nexus, is believed to come withwireless charging capabilities.

As per a report by Unleash The Phones that got this information via Modaco , “Apparently it will also have wireless charging out ofthe box, which seems to be the trend this year.”

The next Nexus phone is believed to be heavily based on the latest Optimus G smartphone recently announced by LG. It is expected to come with the Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-core processor, 2GB of RAM, a 1280 x 768 True-High Definition IPS display, an 8-megapixel camera, and a non-removable battery. It won't have a microSD slot, and between 8GB and 16GB of internal storage.

Google will co-host the launch event with LG where it will introduce the next version of Android – version 4.2, rumoured tobe named Key Lime Pie – along with a new phone, presumably a Nexus based on LG’s recently announced Optimus G. The report also states that the Google’s Nexus flagship device concept is going to undergo a major overhaul.

Now, any manufacturer will be able to release a smartphone under the Nexus banner, but they will have to adhere to some strict rules set by Google. According to the rules, manufacturers must use stock Android and have 64MB of secure memory for media streaming.

Custom UI skins such as HTC’s Sense UI or Samsung’s TouchWiz will be allowed in the new Customization Center. Also, some hardware requirements must be met so that the devices will be able to run Android v5.0, scheduled to arrive by fall 2013.

Although Google seems to be about ready to showcase the next version of Android, devices that run on the operating system are still heavily fragmented. According to a recent report, only about 23.7 percent of all Android devices are running on Ice Cream Sandwich, with 1.8 percent running Jelly Bean.

Apart from the specifications of the LG Nexus, there have also been rumours that the handset will be announced by October end and will be launched in select markets by as soon as November .

As of now, there is no definite word regarding the same, but we will surely keep you up to date regarding everything that is to know about the upcoming LG Nexus smartphone.

Apple gives response to iPhone 5 purple haze Problem

Here is what Apple had to say about the purple haze issue in images of the iPhone 5 camera After many users posted in various forums complaining about the purple haze that appeared in images captured with the iPhone 5.

Symptoms
A purplish or other coloured flare, haze, or spot is imaged from out-of-scene bright light sources during still image or video capture.

Resolution
Most small cameras, including those in every generation of iPhone, may exhibit some form of flare at the edge of the frame when capturing an image with out-of-scene light sources. This can happen when a light source is positioned at an angle (usually just outside the field of view) so that it causes a reflection off the surfaces inside the camera module and onto the camera sensor.
Moving the camera slightly to change the position at which the bright light is entering the lens, or shielding the lens with your hand, should minimize or eliminate the effect.

Though the resolution to the problem can be hardly categorized as a fix, we would definitely like to know how this issue was not so visible with the iPhone 4S?

This is basically antennagate revisited once more where Apple is telling users how to use the phone.
It may be a great fact that Apple has opted for a sapphire crystal lens cover that is thinner and more durable than standard glass.

However, according to their release, they state that it offers crystal clear images and this is notthe case unfortunately.

A recent article by DP Review states, “The most likely cause of the iPhone 5's purple haze is probably lens flare and internal reflections in the camera lens assembly. All lenses are succeptable to lens flare to some degree, and as you can see from the images at the top of this page, the iPhone 4S isn't immune either (ditto the iPhone 4 and competitive smartphones from other manufacturers). But in our shooting we've found that it's a little more noticeable on the iPhone 5. So why is that? It's unlikely that the flare is solely due to the much-vaunted inclusion of a sapphire glass lens cover (although the refractive index of the sapphire glass is different to conventional optical glass, so it could be a contributing factor). Our money is on it being caused by a combination of different things, none of which, alone, is unique to the iPhone 5.”

Apple Has Extended iCloud Storage For MobileMe Customers

After the less than stellar launch of MobileMe , Apple wants to do as much as possible to look after those who supported the fledgling online service as they transition everyone to iCloud .

So it's no surprise that Cupertino has decided to extend its offering of a free upgrade to previous MobileMe customers who made the switch to the new service.

Previous MobileMe customers who opted to move across to the new iCloud platform were initially offered a free copy of Snow Leopard to entice them to the new service.

Later, those who switched to iCloud between October 12th, 2011 and August 1st,2012 were offered an equivalent level of complimentary storage based on their MobileMe subscription.

This week, Apple has sent out notifications to MobileMe switchers enjoying that free 20GB of storage that it had decided to extend the free offer for an additional 12 months.

Not a permanent upgrade
Apple has made it clear that the extension is far from a permanent one with the offer only valid until September 30 2013, or until a user opts to upgrade their iCloud account themselves, thereby cancelling the free upgrade.

While it was initially offered to ease the difficulty of transitioning content from one service to another, with MobileMe now dead in the ground for months , it seems Cupertino is simply looking for a way to reward its loyal customers.

Instagram Celebrates Two Years Of Existense With Over 100Million Users

Two years ago, Instagram came onto the scene and quickly took the entire Internet by storm. Within its short existence, the service has made some major updates, been gobbled up by Facebook for $300 million in cash and 23 million shares of stock, and now has over 100 million registered users with over 5 billion photos uploaded.

As Instagram celebrates another year , it’s fascinating to look back how this one application survived in its industry while other similar ones vanished — PicPlz shut its doors earlier this year while Hipstamatic found itself laying off practically everyone. Of course there have been some new competitors that have sprouted up and even an ecosystem surrounding what Instagram has been doing has emerged. Just look at Nitrogram , Keepsy , Postagram , Hatchcraft, Instacanvas, and many others.

Microsoft's Bing Releases Their Edibly Marketplace app for iOS

Microsoft’s Bing has released their Edibly apps for iPhone, a guide to the Pike Place market in Seattle, which is being described as a trial for a more wide roll-out of the service, which helps both buyers and sellers save time and find each other.

Unfortunately the team created the app first for the iPhone, with the app already in the iOS App Store, while Windows Phone users are left waiting. While the service is not half as compelling as the Photosynth app,Edibly does leave a similar bad taste in the mouth.

Could we once again suggest Microsoft not add to the disparity of apps available between iOS, Android and Windows Phone by first releasing on alternate platforms?

Motorola wins German patent case against Microsoft

Mobile phone maker Motorola achieved a rare victory against software giant Microsoft in a patent case before a German court on Friday, the latest in a wave of patent lawsuits by technology firms fighting over market share.

The regional court in Mannheim ruled that Motorola Mobility, part ofGoogle, did not infringe a Microsoft patent which enables applications to work on different handsets.

This allows application developers to avoid writing separate codes for each handset saving time and development costs.

Germany has become a major battleground in the global patent war between makers of mobile phones, tablet computer devices and their operating software because court actions there have proved relatively cheap and quicker than in other jurisdictions.

Microsoft has won three patent cases against Motorola in Germany.

As a result of these rulings, smartphones with the disputed technology are no longer available on the German market.

"This decision does not impact multiple injunctions Microsoft has already been awarded and has enforced against Motorola productsin Germany," said David Howard, associate general counsel at Microsoft.

Google bought lossmaking Motorola Mobility for $12.5 billion last year, in its largest acquisition ever, aiming to use the company's patents to fend off legal challengesagainst its Android mobile platformand expand beyond its software business.

Other technology companies have also invested billions of dollars in buying up patent portfolios that they can use against rivals.

Motorola could not immediately be reached for comment.

Nokia's Senior Executive Leaves The Company

A senior Nokia executive in charge of product marketing has left the company, after a launch event last month for the company's new Lumia smartphones disappointed investors.
Ilari Nurmi, who was vice president of product marketing and responsible for the company's smartphone strategy, confirmed to Reuters in an email that he recentlyleft the Finnish phone company.

He did not make clear whether he left of his own accord, and the company declined to comment on the circumstances of his departure.
He spoke to media last month when Nokia unveiled the Lumia 920, a top-of-the-range smartphone using Windows software. At the time, investors said they were disappointed by a lack of details such as launch dates and prices.

The success of Lumia phones is widely seen crucial for Nokia as it struggles to compete with rivals Apple and Samsung.

Once the world's biggest mobile phone maker, Nokia fell behind rivals in smartphones and racked up more than 3 billion euros in operating losses in the past 18 months.

It is pinning its hopes on a partnership with Microsoft Corp andits Windows Phone software, whichpowers around 3 percent of the global smartphone market while Google Inc's Android platform controls two-thirds of sales. Apple has under a quarter.

Nokia's new Lumia smartphones will go on sale in November, taking on the iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy S III ahead of the Christmas season, but some analysts said the prices for the colourful handsets looked high.

The Lumia's launch was also marred by news that one of the adsmisled viewers. TheVerge.comfirst reported that a video ad coinciding with the Lumia announcement was in fact not shot with the 920, and the company subsequently apologized.

Customer Reports Gives a Thumbs-up to iPhone 5

Consumer Reports, the influential reviewers' group that blasted the iPhone 4 for a faulty antenna, on Friday gave Apple Inc's latest smartphone a thumbs-up despite echoing widespread complaints about its patchy mapping service.

The organization, which in 2010 withheld its recommendation for the iPhone because of spotty reception when the gadget was held in a certain way, said laboratory tests confirmed that the new iPhone 5 ranked among the best smartphones but its mapping function clearly fell short.
Apple's latest iPhone, sporting a larger 4-inch screen and 4G capability, drew scathing reviews for glaring errors in a new, self-designed mapping service. Chief Executive Tim Cook apologized last week and directed users to rival services run by GoogleInc and others.

"Despite the widespread criticism ithas received, Apple's new Maps app... is competent enough, even if it falls short of what's available for free on many other phones," reviewer Mike Gikas wrote on the group's website on Friday.

"As Apple has recently apologized and promised to fix these and othermap glitches, we expect the Map app to improve in time," he wrote.

Apple's shares were down 1.3 percent at $658.43 in early afternoon trade on Nasdaq.
The consumer electronics juggernaut began selling its latest smartphone last month. Sales of over 5 million in its first three days in stores fell short of outsized expectations as it struggled with supply constraints.

Its homegrown Maps -- stitched together by acquiring companies and employing data from a range of providers including TomTom NV and Waze -- was introduced with much fanfare in June by software chief Scott Forstall. It was billed as a highlight of the updated iOS 6 software.

Errors and omissions quickly emerged after the software was rolled out. They ranged from misplaced buildings and mislabeled cities to duplicate geographical features. Users also complained that the service lacked features that made Google Maps so popular, such as public transit directions and street-view pictures.

The last time Apple faced such widespread criticism -- including from Consumer Reports -- was during 2010's "Antennagate" furor, when users complained of signal reception issues on the then-new iPhone 4. This year the consumer group, which reviews everything from cars to kitchen appliances, also warned initially that Apple's new iPad threw off too much heat.

A defiant Steve Jobs at the time rejected any suggestion the iPhone 4's design was flawed, but offered consumers free phone cases at a rare, 90-minute press conference called to address those complaints.

"Now that our auto experts have completed their tests, including some carried out some days after the launch, they describe the app asrelatively streamlined, and concluded that it generally provides clear guidance, including voice and on-screen directions," Gikas wrote.
"However, they did find that it lacksthe details, traffic data, and customization options offered by the free Google navigation app found on Android phones."

Why Facebook's Search Engine Won't Be Anything Compared To Google's Search Engine

When Facebook's ceo, Mark Zuckerberg mentioned during an interview last month that he wanted to build a search engine, headline writers instantly put Google on notice. Yet, while Larry and Sergey are probably watching closely, the technology and data at Facebook's disposal suggest the company will most likely create something fundamentally different from Google's search service.

Facebook lacks the comprehensive index of the Web that it would need to equal Google's ability to match queries with Web pages—and it would have to invest a lot to create one.

However, flush with cash from its IPOthis summer, the world's largest social network already has its own unique stockpile of data—courtesy of its users' social lives—that could power a new kind of search engine altogether. By mining users' updates about vacations, music listening interests, online habits, and more, Facebook Search could be better at answering subjective questions, about what products, experiences, and businesses you might be interested in, than a traditional search engine.

"It would be very hard to create a general search engine to match Google," says Apostolos Gerasoulis , aprofessor at Rutgers University who helped lead work on search technology at Ask Jeeves after the company acquired his search engine Teoma in 2001. Trying to replicate Google's approach would require Facebook to spend considerable sums developing and deploying software "bots" capable of crawling billions of Web pages every day to gather a comprehensive index of the Web, he says. "Because Google is so big," says Gerasoulis, "they have datafor the long tail"—the uncommon queries for which relatively few pages are a match.

Microsoft's experience with Bing should caution Facebook against such an approach. Since 2009, the Redmond company has spent more than $5 billion on Bing, according to some analyses . Although the quality of Bing's results come close to Google's by some measures, Microsoft has struggled to turn Web users' heads. It serves only 15 percent of U.S. searches, compared with Google's 65 percent.

A different approach may be more appealing to users of Facebook and other websites too. The social network has amassed a huge amount of data (see " What Facebook Knows ") because, in a sense, its users are crawlers that index tiny fragments of both the Web and the offline world. As well as recommending Web pages, videos, and songs by sharing them with friends, and labeling those recommendations with relevant descriptions, Facebook users check into restaurants and other businesses, and post photos tagged to real locations.

Gerasoulis says that could be the feedstock for a search engine focused on answering queries about the things that people share and discuss on Facebook, such as vacations, movies, recipes, and more."When you go to specific subjects, the signals Facebook and other social networks have are amazing," says Gerasoulis. That approach would also open up new avenues foradvertising revenue, since Facebook could sell ads that appear next to theresults for particular search queries. This is the very model that provides most of Google's revenue.

Delivering on that potential would require sophisticated algorithms capable of weighting social information, says Gerasoulis. Google and Microsoft have both experimented with such things through their efforts to introduce social signals into their search engines. But Facebook has much more social data to work with than just counts of "Like" button clicks.

Mining users' comments could help Facebook unlock even more useful data. The new social search engine Trove —built by a startup that just began publicly signing up users—hints at the potential of this approach. It can retrieve content scattered across a person's multiple online accounts. For example, a search for "cute puppy" could reveal an unlabeled Instagram photo of a new pet because the photo previously elicited a tweet using the word "dog" and a Facebook comment saying "adorable!"

As the hosts of so much valuable information, "Facebook and Twitter both have teams working on search,"says Seth Blank, Trove's founder and CEO. Digging deep into social data can uncover a wealth of information and forgotten content related to things people care about, he says, most of it not accessible by conventional search engines.

"If you're planning a vacation somewhere, the truth is your networks have probably already discussed it at length," says Blank by way of example; the networks he means consist of friends of friends aswell as direct contacts. Blank believes his company will survive alongside a Facebook search engine by offering a neutral service capable of linking together different social sites. So far, the big social networks have been happy to let Trove work toward that, he says.

As Microsoft discovered, though, technology alone may not be enoughto tempt people to try a new search engine. Facebook's site already offers a search box at the top of every page, but people use it primarily to find other people, not search for content or answers to questions. Blank says research at Trove has shown that some people presented with a search box pluggedinto their social networks struggle tothink of what to search for.

Gerasoulis says that is not an insignificant challenge for Facebook."Search is about what you want rightnow," says Gerasoulis. "You go to Facebook and hang out; it doesn't currently have the same directness."

If Facebook wants its search engine to succeed, it will need to craft something that not only is matched to the data the company holds but makes it clear to its millions of users why they need another search box intheir life.

Amazon set to spend $1.16B on Seattle office buildings

Amazon is extending its roots in Seattle.

Regulatory filings made public today show that the e-commerce giant and gadget maker entered into an $1.16 billion agreement with Paul Allen's Vulcan Real Estate to purchase the 11 office buildings in Seattle's Lake Union neighborhood that it previously held under lease.

Vulcan Real Estate put the set of buildings on the market at the end of August. Last month the group announced plans to build and lease two more buildings for Amazon, as part of a $160 million project to give the company an extra 380,000 square feet by 2015.

"We are truly excited that Amazon is making this long-term commitment to the South Lake Union community," Vulcan's vice president of real estate, Ada Healey, said about the deal, which is set to close by the end of this year.

In a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Amazon noted that it had made a nonrefundable deposit of about $23 million on the purchase.

Facebook has asked Federal court to dismiss $15 billion privacy suit

Facebook has asked a federal court to dismiss a $15 billion privacy lawsuit because the Facebook users suing the social network didn't specify how they were injured by the company's actions according to Bloomberg's report today.

The suit, filed in May , accuses Facebook of violating user privacy by tracking which Web sites the users visit even when they're logged out of Facebook.

Matthew Brown, a lawyer representing Facebook, told a U.S. district judge in court in San Jose, Calif., that the plaintiffs haven't said which sites they've visited, what kind of data was collected, orwhether Facebook disclosed the information to anyone.

The plaintiffs' attorney, Stephen Grygiel, said in court that Facebookwas tracking users' activity by intercepting their interactions withthird-party Web sites, and that this action is not covered in Facebook's privacy policies. Users said they consented only to the tracking -- which places cookies, or files that track and transmit which sites are visited, on their computers -- whilethey are logged in to Facebook.

The, lawsuit, which combines 21 privacy lawsuits against the social network into a single, class-action suit, was filed on behalf of U.S. residents who subscribed to Facebook from May 2010 to September 2011 in 10 different states, including California, Texas, and Alabama.

Facebook launches its first ad with Title: The Things That Connect Us

Facebook Stormed 1 Billon Active Users milestone recently, and it is celebrating this moment in a big way. If you logged in to Facebook today, chances are that spotted it’s first major ad, titled ' The Things That Connect Us '. The new ad is all about things that connect people. By way of this advertisement, Facebook claims to be ‘honouring the tradition’ of connecting people. It explains how everyday objects such as chairs, doorbells, or those such as aeroplanes go about bringing people together.

In an official post introducing its first ad, Facebook’s Zuckerberg writes,

“Celebrating a billion people is very special to me. It's a moment to honor the people we serve.

For the first time in our history, we've made a brand video to express what our place is on this earth.

We believe that the need to open up and connect is what makes us human. It's what brings us together. It's what brings meaning to our lives.

Facebook isn't the first thing people have made to help us connect. We belong to a rich tradition of people making things that bring us together.

Today, we honor this tradition.

We honor the humanity of the people we serve.

We honor the everyday things people have always made to bring us together:

Chairs, doorbells, airplanes, bridges, games. These are all things that connect us.

And now Facebook is a part of thistradition of things that connect us too.

I hope you enjoy this video as much as we do.

Thanks for helping connect a billion people.”

The social networking giant is now officially a billion users strong . There are now one billion active monthly users on Facebook, and the California-based companyhas stated in its fact sheet that it arrived at this milestone last month on September 14 at 12:45 p.m., Pacific Time.

Facebook has presented some of its key metrics in its fact sheet. Facebook has registered over 1.13trillion Likes, and made 140.3 billion friend connections. A whopping 219 billion photos havebeen uploaded on Facebook since its launch. The data for calculatingthis number was extracted on September 10, 2012 and takes into consideration the total number of photos that are on the site currently. It does not factor in deleted or removed photos. If it did, the estimates would go up considerably to 265 billion photos uploaded on Facebook ever.

Since the introduction of geo-tagging on Facebook in August 2010, 17 billion location-tagged posts have been made, including check-ins. The statistics for this feature were considered from its launch date to September 10, this year.

A little trivia about Facebook's ad campaign - the ad will be translated into 12 different languages and the global campaign is aimed at its users in 13 countries, namely - Brazil, France, Germany, India, Indonesia,Italy, Japan, Mexico, Philippines, Russia, Spain, UK, and the US.

The ad, 'The Things That Connect Us' is a minute and a half long. It has been produced by ad agency Wieden & Kennedy, and directed by Alejandro G. Inarritu.

Galaxy phones Fetches record $7.3 billion profit For Samsung Electronics

Samsung Electronics reported quarterly profit of $7.3 billion on Friday, a fourth straight record quarter and nearly double last year's figure, as strong sales of its Galaxy smartphones more than offset reduced orders forchips and screens from Apple Inc, the South Korean group's main rivaland leading customer.

But the record run will come to an end in the current quarter as Samsung spends more on marketing to counter Apple's latest iPhone and other rival products in acrowded $200 billion plus global smartphone market.

This year's expected record profit of28 trillion won ($25 billion) will also trigger higher performance related payouts to many of Samsung's 206,000 staff early next year. And Samsung may have to set money aside this quarter if it fails in an appeal to overturn an August 24 U.S. court ruling that awarded more than $1 billion in damages to Apple for patent infringements by Samsung.

Analysts expect earnings at the world's top technology firm by revenue to decline until the second quarter of next year as a slump in computer sales and the weak global economy sap demand for chips and electronics products.

Ahead of full quarterly results due by October 26, Samsung, valued at $197 billion and the world's leading maker of TVs, smartphones and memory chips, estimated its July-September operating profit jumped 91 percent to 8.1 trillion won from a year ago - beating an average forecast of 7.6 trillion won in a Reuters survey of 16 analysts.

That would be more than a fifth higher than the previous record in April-June. Samsung estimated its third-quarter revenue at 52 trillion won, in line with market forecasts of 51.7 trillion won.

Samsung shares have risen 7.2 percent since a U.S. court ruled on August 24 that the Korean firm copied parts of Apple's iPhone and awarded the California-based firm more than $1 billion in damages.

Apple is up less than 1 percent.
Profit from the mobile division is likely to have more than doubled toaround 5 trillion won, or around two thirds of its total profit, as smartphone shipments are estimated at around 58 million, including 18-20 million Galaxy S IIIs.

Strong handset sales made up for reduced profits from its chip business, as prices of its mainstay dynamic random access memory (DRAM) chips, used in computers and mobiles, dropped 14 percent in the September quarter.

Contract prices of DRAM chips now trade below what it costs most manufacturers to make them, and will squeeze near-term earnings, analysts say. Tablets and smartphones, the real growth areas, use far smaller memory storage.

"Meaningful DRAM price increases may be difficult in the near term without more aggressive production cuts," Goldman Sachs said in a client note this week.

Samsung is expected to reduce its investment in chips next year due to the drop in demand, which could be bad news for semiconductor equipment manufacturers such as ASML.
